P. vulgaris often occurs in ruderal areas such as open fields, powerline corridors, right-of-ways, roadsides, and drainage ditches. It has also been found in longleaf pine forests and calcareous grasslands. It has a broad tolerance for light and shade and prefers mesic soils.[1]

Associated species of P. vulgaris include Rhynchospora colorata, Scutellaria integrifolia, and Polygala boykinii.[1]
