W. virginica occurs in wet, swampy areas such as titi depressions in longleaf pine-wiregrass savannas, cabbage palm-mixed hardwood hammocks, and riparian areas. It will grow in shaded to semi-shaded light conditions.[1]
Associated species of W. virginica include Woodwardia areolata, Athyrium, Deparia, and Dryopteris.[1]
