P. caespitosum grows in shady, wet areas of floodplains, mixed woodlands, ditches, powerline corridors, roadsides, and forest edges. It is often successful in areas with heavy soil disturbance.[1]
Associated species of P. caespitosum include Polygonum glabrum and Polygonum punctatum.[1]
