C. spectabilis occurs along moist shores and forest edges, as well as in meadows and annually burned pinelands. It grows in full sun in sandy, loam, or clay soils. C. spectabilis is also commonly found in mesic disturbed areas such as along roadsides and railroads, and in old fields and fallow land. [1]
