In the Coastal Plain in Florida, S. prostrata occurs in river floodplain forests and longleaf pine woods. It has occurred in human disturbed areas such as a powerline corridor running through a longleaf pine-scrub oak sand ridge (FSU Herbarium). It has been observed growing in loamy sand (FSU Herbarium).
