V. elliotii occurs in natural ecosystems such as longleaf pine ridges, sand pine woodlands, slash pine woods, open pine-oak woodlands, mixed hardwood forests, bluff slopes, swampy woodlands, riverbanks, brackish marsh shores, floodplains, and streambanks. It will also grow in areas prone to human disturbance such as roadsides. V. elliottii can tolerate a range of soil drainage types and is usually found in loam, sand or loamy sand.[1]

Associated species of V. elliottii include Vaccinium amoenum, Magnolia virginica, and Ilex.[1]
