V. virgatum occurs in natural communities such as longleaf pine forests, open pine-oak woods, deciduous forests, scrub habitats, pine-saw palmetto flats, low wet savannas, sandy ridges, lake shores, and floodplains. It grows in open, mesic or well-drained conditions.[1]
Associated species of V. virgatum include Vaccinium aroboreum, Lyonia ligustrina, Photinia pyrifolia, and Nyssa sylvatica.[1]
